The Homestead Sourdough Cookbook by Georgia Varozza

The Homestead Sourdough Cookbook is a great cookbook. There are so many great recipes, I am excited to try out all the different ones. Yesterday I made the soft sandwich bread, and it was a hit with my family. It turned out perfectly.

I love that this cookbook has a section on getting started because sourdough can be tricky. I was very excited about the variety of recipes, from breads, biscuits, bagels, rolls, muffins, cookies, pancakes, pizza, pretzels, and even fried fish and more. With over 100 recipes, this cookbook will keep me busy while I continue to try to master sourdough baking. The recipes are fairly easy to follow. The only downside is that you are one who enjoys pictures of the final product; this would not be the cookbook for you. There are simple, drawn pictures, but no photographs.

More from Jennifer

Ever have one of those songs that you’ve loved for a long time and then you discover someone else covered the song? As a general rule, I tend to like the first version better. It’s familiar and often brings up good memories.

However, (you knew there was a however coming, right?) I discovered a different version of “Pieces of April” solely by accident. And it was done by the guy who wrote the song, Dave Loggins. Three Dog Night’s version is great. Chuck Negron did some of his best work on that track. But Dave Loggins’s version touched me in a new way.

So, I did some investigating. For one thing, I wanted to know what the song was about. Was there really an April? Or was it just a play on words?

Turns out, there was an April. And that Dave Loggins enjoyed interacting with fans online. So he’d written that he and April (the girlfriend) had a relationship for three Aprils (meaning the month) before they broke up. He missed her and wrote the song for her and it was one of his favorites that he’d written.

However, (you should’ve known this one was coming ๐Ÿ˜‰) Dave passe away in 2024 so I didn’t get to ask him any more questions.

As I was putting this series together, I listed all the rock and roll songs I could think of from 1960 to the early 1970s that had girls’ names in the titles. Then I grouped them for similarity in beat and title words. When I came to “Pieces of April”, I immediately knew it would have to be an amnesia story. I started it out as a young married couple who ends up going through this but it wasn’t working. I struggled a lot trying to rework what I’d been musing on for months and the funny thing is, once I got past chapter five, things started happening. I’m not a plotter but I’m not a pure pansters/discovery writer either. But this book was a lot of discovery for me and how the threads all got tied up, that’s a God thing. .

Review

Pieces of April by Jennifer Lynn Cary was a fun story, and I enjoyed returning to Kokomo. This is the 9th book in the Weather Girls Wedding Shoppe and Venue series, though it can be read as a standalone.

April has quite the go of things. From running out of gas to spraining her hand and then breaking the same hand soon after. When her new neighbor is none other than Paul, a boy whose life she destroyed, trying to find forgiveness is a hard thing. When April chooses to forgive someone who hurt her, she gets to see the other side.

Paul has gone through his own struggles. After an army injury, he returns home, missing his memory. Then Paul decides to return to his childhood hometown. Something has happened here, but he doesn’t remember. When he meets April, he recognizes her, but doesn’t know what the connection is. As they get to know each other, Paul doesn’t want to know what happens. Trying to work through forgiveness, but can we really forgive if we don’t know what happened? These two find themselves falling for each other, despite their past.

Jennifer Lynn Cary did a great job intertwining faith in this story.

Can dreams be trusted when life feels like a nightmare?

Sophia chose to honor her deceased husband’s wishes by visiting his hometown of Passignano sul Trasimeno in the Umbrian region of Italy. She’s trying to find the peace he promised, really she is, while she studies his language and sips caffรจ with a view of mountains and lake. Only, things begin to happen involving a red-haired child who speaks of things she cannot know—and the child’s father whose very presence challenges that peace.

Dr. Luca Moretti still wrestles with guilt three years after the death of his wife and older children. Overwhelmed by grief, Luca gave the care of his toddler daughter, Noemi, to his sister. It was supposed to be temporary; it wasn’t. Now, Luca wants Noemi back.

When his sister flees, taking Noemi into hiding, Sophia joins forces with a desperate Luca to piece together dreams and voices and supernatural nudges to retrace Noemi’s steps. It’s going to take trust, though, something in short supply for both Luca and Sophia. They’ll have to learn to trust in one another, and, more importantly, to trust in God—that a God who would allow such pain really does mean to work it all out for good. For Noemi. About the Author

Normandie Fischer

Normandie Fischer had the best of several worlds: a Southern heritage, access to schooling in the DC area (which meant lots of cultural adventures), and several years of sculpture studies in Italy. It might have been better for her if she'd used all these opportunities more wisely, but it's possible that the imperfect and the unwise also add fodder for the artist and the writer.

She writes Christian and Southern fiction as well as romantic suspense from her waterfront base in coastal North Carolina, where she lives with her husband, their two dogs, and a once-feral cat. If only her children and grandchildren lived within hailing distance, life would be just about perfect.

Review

Escape to Passignano is the first book I have read written by Normandie Fischer. This is book 7 in the Carolina Coast series, though I did read it as a standalone and had no issues following along.

There are many layers to this story, which kept me guessing throughout.  Sophia has recently lost her husband and has moved to Italy to be close to his family and spend some time where her husband grew up. Finding some healing while also drawing close to God.

Luca is a doctor and is dealing with the death of his wife and his children. While trying to process it all, he gives custody of his remaining daughter to his sister. Now years have passed, and he is trying to get custody back, but his sister has taken his daughter and hidden. Luca is searching, and Sophia is helping him figure out where the sister might be hiding. While working together, they also begin to have feelings for one another.

Deborah is convinced her husband is having an affair, so she has left to enjoy Italy on her own. Along the way, she has found herself also cheating on her husband. What a mess Deborah finds herself in when she has a contract and an STD, as well as having a horrible accident, and finds herself in the hospital needing long-term care due to the injury. There are many layers to Deborah. Working through the forgiveness and rebuilding of her family.

Normandie Fischer did a great job of intertwining faith throughout the story.

Find Me in the Blooms is the first book I have read written by Alyssa Schwarz, and I look forward to reading some more. This is Season 2, Book 2 in the Johnathan Island series, and although this could be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the series as a whole. Especially if you enjoy a great contemporary romance with Hallmark vibes.

Kate Sullivan is instructed by her doctor to take stress leave and take a period of rest. So back to Johnathan Island she goes. Her sister Dani has been hard at work reviving the Island and bringing the Grand Hotel back to life. Now Dani is getting married. Kate offers to help Dani in any way possible, so when Dani goes on her honeymoon, Kate steps in to keep things running. Her main task is the Apple Blossom festival. When the florist arrives to begin work, it is none other than her ex-fiancรฉ, Lincoln, who left her the night before their wedding. Now they are working together on the Apple Blossom Festival. With family issues to work through and the past to heal, they have a lot going on.

This second-chance romance is perfect and sweet with kisses only.

Giveaway and Review: The Last Disciple: Sharing the Gospel by: Kurt Brouwer

About the Book

Book: The Last Disciple: Sharing the Gospel (The Last Disciple Book 5)

Author: Kurt Brouwer

Genre: Biblical Fiction

Release Date: December 19, 2025

Discover the Untold Story of Sharing the Gospel Message

John, the last disciple of Christ, holds the completed Gospel of John in his hand. But when an earthquake strikes, he and his two scribes, Emmaus and Avram, must fight fire and destruction to preserve the precious scroll.

The epic saga of the Last Disciple continues in this captivating new Christian historical novel from Kurt Brouwer.

Stand With John the Last Disciple of Christ

John had followed Jesus for three years. He saw the Son of God sacrifice his life on the Cross; he entered the empty tomb after Jesus rose from the grave; and he watched his Lord and Savior ascend to heaven from the Mount of Olives.

Now his mission is to share his eyewitness account of Jesus with believers throughout the Roman Empire. In the face of grave difficulties, God provides help from two surprising sources. Tiberius Celsus, a Roman officer and unlikely ally, brings a copy of the Gospel of John all the way from Ephesus to the believers in Antioch. And the Apostle Timothy helps John fulfill his divine mission of sharing the story of Christ with believers in Ephesus.

Temptation And Betrayal Plague Believers

John also faces human fear and frailty among believers. Archelaus, a wine merchant, resists temptation and returns to the faith. Diotrephes, a former church leader, betrays both his faith and his fellow believers.

If you’re struggling with doubt, searching for meaning, or are hungry to deepen your faith, The Last Disciple: Sharing the Gospel is the Christian novel you’ve been waiting for—biblically accurate fiction that strengthens and informs your faith.

Have you ever wondered what it truly cost to preserve, protect, and share Scripture? Do you long to experience the unwavering devotion of the early Christians? The Last Disciple: Sharing the Gospel will help you transform and renew your spiritual journey.

Don’t miss this fascinating tale of believers uniting to share the gospel message of salvation and the hope and promise of eternal life.

Review

The Last Disciple: Sharing the Gospel is the first book I have read written by Kurt Brouwer, and I look forward to reading more. This is the fifth book in The Last Disciple series, and though I did not read the other books in this series, it would be nice to go back and read from the beginning. I did not have too many issues just reading this as a standalone. Though I do plan on going back to the beginning of the series and reading it as a whole.

This year, I have had the pleasure of really diving into biblical fiction, and this book did not disappoint. I loved getting to see behind the scenes of the gospel of John. This book brought to life the disciple and author of the gospel of John. It was a great journey seeing the dedication that went into not only writing but also distributing the gospel in the early church days. This book brought the bible to life.

Excerpt

A storm was coming.

And for Brooke Sumner, the storm on the horizon spelled nuisance, not trouble.

Scratch that. It spelled out both descriptive words in thirteen annoying letters: Storm Whitlock. Six feet four inches of muscle, a too-confident smile, and a head full of wavy brown hair she’d like to shave off him. Because how on earth was it fair for a man to be that distractingly handsome and bothersome all in one breath?

She wasn’t quite sure exactly at what point Storm Whitlock had gone from being an annoying brother type to her first crush, but she clearly remembered the day he’d crushed her under that size 13 shoe of his in a devastating act of betrayal. Chosen that criminal, Annika Weitz, over her. All their years of friendship couldn’t compete with his greed, and she’d never seen his disloyalty coming.

Storm’s ability to forget everything they’d built between them stung so sharply that she’d cashed in her shares of their business and walked away last year. He’d retained control of the pawnshop they’d worked their tails off to open together, and he’d become her competition.

Miles

Second chances come in all shapes and sizes. Let’s be clear, I did not see this one coming in any shape or size. I was over Juliette as soon as she started dating my brother years ago.

But here we are. I’ve lost my brother, Juliette’s lost her husband, and our short-lived summer camp romance from when we were teenagers is rising from the grave to haunt me—or rather, invite me into an unexpected, irresistible redemption opportunity.

No problem. I’m a handyman. I fix things for a living. And I want to fix everything that’s been shattered in Juliette’s life.

Unfortunately for me, I overwhelmed her years ago with my big personality. Who’s to say I won’t be too much again? But I hope and pray I’m not because there’s no holding my feelings back this time, and with the way she’s distracting me, using power tools is out of the question.

Juliette

I don’t need my brother-in-law, Miles, swooping in to save me and my girls. I may not be thriving as a single mom, but I am surviving. The last thing my life needs is more upheaval, which is what I’ll get if I misread this chemistry between me and Miles.

Besides, my heart’s got a bigger issue: the summer camp that saved my life is for sale, and my old dream of running a camp is resurrecting with a vengeance. Only, it’s even less practical now than when I was a teenager.

I can’t let my heart run away with my good sense—regarding Miles or camp.

But I really want that camp, no matter how impossible the dream. And why am I acting like a schoolgirl crushing hard on her first boy? It’s just Miles.

Wild hearts scheme big to buy a summer camp in this swoony, second chance romance with found family, quirky characters, and sizzling chemistry. And it’s all wrapped up in a low spice, inspirational package. Where the Wild Hearts Are is the first in a new rom-com series featuring adventurous friends and the love and laughter they bring to their small, mountain town.

About the Author

Sondra Kraak

Sondra Kraak (pronounced croc, like the shoe) is a part-time writer, full-time Jesus follower. A native of Washington State, she now lives in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains where she serves as the Worship Coordinator at her church. She and her Michigan-born husband, Nate, have two children--a daughter in college and a son in high school. Sondra fails miserably at social media and Jane Austen trivia, but she’s a champion sports fan (yah, hockey!), and has recently had success making sourdough bread (miracles do happen). Don’t ask her to drink eggnog (or kiss her husband after he does), but she’ll happily consume most teas and coffee, so long as it’s decaf (otherwise her heart races and she gets chatty). Her current to-do list includes training for a backpacking trip and folding laundry that’s been left in the dryer for two days. But first, just one more chapter.

Review

Where the Wild Hearts Are is the first story I have read written by Sondra Kraak. I could not put this book down. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

This story is such a sweet story. There is a group of friends who met as youth at summer camp. Now the group is all adults. Juliette has gone through a lot in her life. She is a mother to three sweet and spunky little girls while dealing with the death of her husband. She moves back to her hometown to be closer to a sense of home and to give her some space from her brother-in-law, Miles. Juliette and Miles dated briefly before Juliette and Phillip dated and then got married. There was never anything between Juliette and Miles, but since the death of Phillip, things seem to have shifted. Miles is the doting uncle and always seems to show up at the right time to help with the girls. Miles is a handyman, so he is fixing up the family cabin, which just so happens to be closer to Juliette’s new place. Juliette is keeping things afloat just barely.

When the camp is put up for sale, Juliette dreams of purchasing it and keeping the legacy alive. The group of camp friends comes together to save their beloved camp. Working hard to raise the funds to purchase the camp, but not everything is as easy as one might think. Watching the friends come together to work on bringing this dream to life was great.

This second-chance romance was so clean and sweet.

With faith elements sprinkled throughout, it was a great story. I am looking forward to book two in the series.

Warrior by Lisa Phillips

Warrior is book two in the Heroes of Renegade series, which is a multi-author series. Warrior is written by Lisa Phillips, who is one of my favorite Christian Romantic Suspense authors; she is an instant read for me.

Luca has settled down in Renegade, Colorado, and started doing private investigative work. That is when he runs into none other than Dr. Kira Yassan, a doctor who fixed him up when he was on the front lines. Never in Luca’s wildest dreams would he have thought he would run into her state side, let alone find himself working alongside Dr. Kira, when the US Marshal asks for help with a special case, a former cartel kingpin.

This story kept me on the edge of my seat in this veteran medical suspense story. Warrior is a great addition to this new series that intertwines with favorite series like Chasing Fire and Last Chance County.

This romance was perfect and sweet.

Lisa Phillips did a great job of intertwining faith elements throughout.

These Moments Between Us by: Grace Schlabach

These Moments Between Us by Grace Schlabach is the perfect story. This coming-of-age, dual point of view story that follows a homeschool mom of three, Franny, and her 15-year-old daughter, Lindsey, who is ready to follow her big dreams. Lindsey wants to graduate from high school early, to become a doctor like her dad, and get her driver’s license. Franny is just trying to hold on to her daughter’s childhood a little bit longer. Franny and Lindsey find their relationship a little strained as they work through it. Franny has a friend who is a little farther ahead in her motherhood journey and is in the process of one daughter getting married and the other graduating high school early. She helps encourage Franny not to fight it, but helps encourage her daughter. During this period, Franny receives a brand-new border collie puppy, which takes a lot of time and effort to train. Lindsey was against it from the beginning. This puts a little strain on their relationship, but it is a great learning opportunity.

I love that this story met me right where I am at, or about to be at, in the next few years. It was encouraging and a great reminder of things to work on and think about in my own relationship as a mother. I loved that faith was intertwined throughout the story.

Return to Yellowstone with the next generation of our beloved characters from the original series.

Saddlehorn, MT

Ashton Anderson, former town sweetheart and prodigal son of rancher Clint Anderson, has finally returned home. Where has he been for the last ten years, you ask? Apparently, working a smaller rodeo circuit up north. With his strength and skill, he should have done well, but he has returned battered, bruised, and grieving the loss of his faithful gelding, Dusty. As for the girlfriend who turned down his marriage proposal all those years ago . . .

Kelsey Winters has left her less-than-idyllic past behind. She now helps others as a therapist at the therapeutic riding center outside of town, although her own personal life seems to be a solid mess. She’s tried to be a good older sister to her brother, Darren, but she can’t protect him—or herself—from his poor choices. They’re one bad decision away from homelessness when they’re robbed and Darren is put in jail for possession of a controlled substance.

Due to circumstances beyond their control, Kelsey and Ashton’s long-ago romance resurfaces. But will it leave the gate running, or suffer a colossal wreck?

Review

Prodigal son trope meets cowboy, yes please.

Ashton by Anne Perreault is the second book I have read by her, and I look forward to reading some more. This is a new series based on the descendants of a previous series. This can be read as a standalone.

The story begins with Ashton proposing to Kelsey at the age of 17. Because of Kelsey’s upbringing, she declines, and in the aftermath, Ashton runs off. 10 years have passed, and after a riding accident, Ashton has returned home. A lot has changed in 10 years. Kelsey was able to fight all odds-her father in prison, her mother died when she was 10, being brought up by her grandmother, who blames Kelsey and her brother for ruining her son’s life, being half Crow and having to deal with the racism and rejection that caused.

Kelsey’s grandmother, though rich, left the grandchildren with no inheritance when she died, instead choosing to give her wealth to charity. With no help at all, Kelsey graduated from college with a master’s degree and is working as a therapist at the therapeutic riding center. Kelsey is trying hard to help her brother Darren, who is struggling with drugs and finds himself in trouble with the law, after a home break-in. Things seem to be spiraling, but leaning into God is the only way that Kelsey is going to get through it all.

Ashton is trying to find a new normal for himself. Having returned home and mended relationships while also healing from his accident. He is still in love with Kelsey, but doesn’t want to scare her off. He wants what is best for Kelsey. I won't ruin the story, so I will leave things there, but this story was perfect.

This second-chance romance is perfect and sweet with kisses only.

Anne Perreault did a great job of intertwining faith throughout the story.

Review

The Ultimate Blindside is the third book in this series, written by Leslea Wahl. Though it can be read as a standalone and still understand what is going on, you would miss out on some of the friend dynamics and Sophie and Jake’s story. This is a YA mystery, so if you love this genre, this will be the perfect read for you. I am currently on the hunt for some great Christian YA for my kids, and this story checks all the boxes for me.

Jake is an Olympic medalist snowboarder. Sophie is Jake’s girlfriend. She is an aspiring journalist and photographer. She started working with a journalist on the previous story to help show the inside aspects of Jake’s story. Wherever these two go, adventure is right behind them. That is where this story begins. There is a movie being made about Jake. In the middle of filming, a car careens off the road and soars into the water. Jake instantly jumps into action and swims out to save the mother and daughter who were in the car. When the story is picked up by the news stations, the mother and daughter find themselves hiding as they are on the run from a domestic abuse situation. Jake and Sophie jump right in to try and help them. Well, there is always more to the story. This story had me trying to figure out what was going on and what might happen.

The romance aspect is light and sweet, with kisses only between Jake and Sophie. Jake and Sophie have started talking with the different church youths in the area about maintaining purity within relationships. I love that it includes the dating rules in the back of the book.

Leslea Wahl did a great job of intertwining faith throughout the book. It was encouraging to see how the character's faith was an integral aspect of their life. Though written from a catholic aspect, it can be enjoyed by all.
