Can the Matchmaker Find True Love?

Emma-Jane (EJ) Bennett and Jordan Knight are longtime best friends who codesigned the immensely successful dating app, Dream Match. Success starts to go to EJ’s head when she gets caught up in the famous and money-hungry social circles and starts dating the son of a TV mogul. But Jordan’s feelings have grown from friendship to more. He determines to protect her by exposing Eric Churchill for the two-timer he is, finally agreeing to attend a function with her at the Sydney Opera House. But his best intentions go awry when EJ is embarrassed and runs for the security of home, small-town roots, and The Silver Teapot Café, feeling like Jane Austen’s chastised Emma—only without her Mr. Knightley.

More from Carolyn

Do you know someone who has found love online?

I do. I have numbers of friends and even a family member who have found love and married thanks to dating apps and the like. This newer form of meeting people is something I’ve referenced in several of my books (including Only You Can Love Me), as several of my characters have used an app called Dream Match, a romance matchmaking app for Christian singles around the world. But when I first mentioned Dream Match years ago I didn’t realise at the time that I’d end up writing a story about how the inventor of Dream Match would finally meet her match.

And it seemed perfect to me that Jane Austen’s Emma Woodhouse, known for her matchmaking skills, should be reflected in a modern day context as being the ultimate matchmaker, EJ Bennett, who is responsible for helping hundreds of people find love online. Even if she doesn’t think she needs or wants love for herself.

Playing with Jane Austen’s characters and putting them in a modern setting is a lot of fun. So not only does Emma Woodhouse become EJ Bennett, but George Knightley becomes EJ’s best friend and app co-designer Jordan Knight, the straight shooter she needs. And Frank Churchill, the man Emma starts to fall for, becomes Eric Churchill, son of a TV mogul squillionaire.

The first book in The Silver Teapot series, Not Exactly Mr. Darcy, also played around with some of Austen’s settings, placing the story in a small town in Australia called Wattle Vale. I had fun further developing the Australian connections by setting other key scenes in iconic places like the Sydney Opera House and Bondi Beach, which naturally meant I had to visit for “research.”

So I hope readers enjoy this little taste of Australia, and all the fun references to Jane Austen’s Emma. Be sure to check out my website and follow me on social media for more Jane Austen inspiration and fun, and get ready to enjoy Not Precisely Mr. Knightley, a sweet and swoony best friends-to-more romance that shows the path to true love is never smooth – even for the professional matchmaker.

Happy reading!

Review

Not Precisely, Mr. Knightley is the second book in the Silver Teapot series by Carolyn Miller. And though it can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the series as a whole for greater enjoyment. Each book has been loosely based on Jane Austen's works, and this one is based on Emma.

Emma-Jane Bennett, or EJ to her friends, has created a Christian matchmaking app with the help of her friend Jordan Knight. She is finally at a place where she can quit her job to try to launch the app full-time and work on expanding its reach. When she meets Eric Churchill at a party, and he begins to pursue EJ, or is it the app he is after? Eric is rich and is after the matchmaking app, and is trying to purchase it. But not everything is going great. EJ is wrapped up in the money and fame that is coming from hanging out with Eric Churchill. EJ has a lot to figure out as she has lost herself in the new friendships, and feels too good for her family and friends. When the truth comes out, Emma-Jane must decide what is true. I loved that this story was set in Australia.

Watching EJ letting her faith slip and watching her come back to her relationship with God and work on her heart was a great reminder to put God first.

The romance was sweet and perfect with kisses only.

About the Book

The Brunswick

Title: The Brunswick
Author: Callie Murray
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: May 19, 2026
Genre: Christian Historical Romance

When Cora provides a safe haven for Jewish refugee children, she discovers that opening her doors means risking everything, including her heart.

In 1939 Georgia, far removed from the war brewing overseas, Cora Cain's world feels small--and shrinking. There, she runs The Brunswick, her family's once-grand hotel, which is now struggling as the town's general store. When Thomas Watkins arrives seeking work and solace after his mother's death, a connection sparks between them. Through Thomas, Cora glimpses a life beyond obligation and her war hero father's unpredictable moods.

But everything changes when Cora is asked to turn The Brunswick into a sanctuary for Jewish children fleeing persecution in Germany. As Cora and Thomas prepare for the children's arrival, they struggle to confront their pasts--and the prejudice of their neighbors--as their fragile hope is put to the test. Meanwhile, in Vienna, ten-year-old Charlotte is offered refuge in America. But even with the horrors she sees around her, she wonders how her parents could possibly send her away. As war's shadow begins to reach small-town Georgia, each person must face what love demands and decide what to hold on to and what to let go.

Review

The Brunswick has blown me away. This is Callie Murray’s debut novel, and she has hit it out of the park. I look forward to reading her future works. The story takes place during WWII. And though there are endless WWII novels, it never ceases to amaze me how each story is different. The war affected each country and group so differently. So, getting to dive into a piece of history is always a treat. This story is fictional but is based on some true elements.

Cora’s father, Ralph Cain, built the Brunswick Hotel for his wife. When the Great Depression hit, the hotel business was hit hard. His wife returned to her home country, never to return. Swirling into a depression, Ralph Cain stays in bed and does not leave his room for anything. Cora has transformed the hotel into a general store and tearoom to try to keep things running. But with only Cora to run the business, it’s a little hard.

Thomas has returned from medical school. When they found out his German heritage, things became extremely hard. At home, he has stepped up to help Cora so that she can make deliveries and keep the store open.

Cora is asked to turn the Brunswick into a place for Jewish children to stay while they wait for their parents to get papers to travel to America. Cora agrees, though she doesn’t think her father will like the idea.

Thomas volunteers to go with the couple to Austria to bring the children to America. While they are boarding the children on the train, Thomas gets taken off the train and detained by Nazi’s. They take him to their facility, where they question him. He can not make sense of what the Nazi’s want to know, but it has something to do with his mother’s ring that he was wearing.

We get to see things from Charlotte’s perspective, one of the Jewish girls who comes over to America with the group. Seeing how things were for her in Austria and then in America. Not knowing what would happen. Not knowing if she would ever see her parents again.

This story had so many layers to it. I loved learning this piece of history and getting to see it from the point of view of Cora, Thomas, and Charlotte.

You Bet Your Stretch Marks and Study Guide By: Abbie Halberstadt

Title: You Bet Your Stretch Marks and Study Guide
Author: Abbie Halberstadt
Publisher: Harvest House
Genre: Non Fiction

You Bet Your Stretch Marks by Abbie Halberstadt is such an encouragement. Abbie pulls from her years of experience as a mom of 10 kids and uses scriptures and stories to help make the reader relate to the truths she presents. Helping the reader find beauty and worth in motherhood. Paired with beautiful illustrations for stand-out quotes and scripture. With Titus Two, a perspective from other moms to help give some more perspective. At the end of the chapter, Abbie includes Worldly and Biblical narratives to help give a perspective shift, with some action steps, questions, and a prayer. I loved that I came away from this book with some ideas to implement in my own motherhood journey and came away encouraged.

I read this book paired with the study guide. I loved that each chapter in the study guide had a short video clip from Abbie, giving it that personal touch. The guide contains some action steps like writing out scripture, some questions to answer, and some group discussion questions if you want to go through this book with a group. Though you do not need to have the study guide to go through the book, it was a nice tool. And pairs nicely with the book.

Adrienne craned her neck to peer out the window as the airplane began its descent. “Look, there’s the Eiffel Tower!” She pointed a finger at the famous structure growing larger and larger as they approached. “Can you see it?”

Marie sat up and nodded as she straightened her ponytail.

Eddie leaned across Marie and squinted. “It’s uglier than I’d expected.”

“Don’t say that!” Marie gasped. “You don’t want to ignite Adrienne’s wrath.”

“It just strikes me as odd to see this bulky metal structure in the middle of such a beautiful, historical city. That’s all.”

“Actually, you’re not the only one who has voiced that opinion,” Adrienne conceded.

“Many of the French said the same thing when the tower was built in 1889 for the World’s Fair celebration of the Centennial of the Revolution. Besides, it was only supposed to be temporary. But now it’s one of the most famous monuments in the world.”

Eddie folded his arms as he glanced at Marie. “See, I know a thing or two about culture.”

Adrienne’s heartbeat quickened as the plane continued to descend, then a jolt signaled that the wheels had touched down. They were finally here. In Paris!

After leaving security, a familiar, well-coiffed lady in a lavender sundress and hat greeted them.

“Tante Cici!” Adrienne exclaimed as she ran to embrace her aunt. The sweet scent of Chanel perfume filled her with a sense of familiarity.

“Bonjour, chérie.” Cici enveloped Adrienne in her arms and planted a kiss on each cheek.

“Bienvenue à Paris.”

Excerpt

Finally, the highway signs listed Whelk’s Island among the beach destinations. The road narrowed as they approached the three-mile Wright Memorial Bridge, the only road into Whelk’s Island from the north. The waters of the sound shifted between blue and gray, catching the sunlight in a dance of fleeting glimmers.

The salt air drifted in through her open window, mingling with the faint scent of coconut from the hand lotion Kendra had spilled in the console weeks ago.

Her daughter slouched, earbuds in, eyes fixed on the endless scroll of her phone. Nina’s heart ached, the weight of these past three years pressing hard against her chest. The drawn-out divorce and the loss of Nina’s father had really taken a toll on both of them.

“You okay over there?” Nina asked softly, hoping for something more than a shrug.

Kendra didn’t look up. “Fine.”

That word had become Kendra’s shield. Nina reached over, squeezing her hand. “We’re almost there, sweetheart.”

Whelk’s Island felt like a promise. In Nina’s mind, this bridge was the path passing from one world into another, leaving the chaos behind.

She slowed the car as they crossed onto Whelk’s Island. The narrow road wound past a bait shop with a carved-wood pelican out front, an ice cream stand already gearing up for the summer rush, and expanses of scrubby dunes that felt more foreign than familiar. There was no nostalgia here—just a quiet hope that maybe this place, her mother’s new home, could offer the fresh start they both so desperately needed.

“Look at that big old oak,” Nina said, nodding toward a gnarled tree with branches stretched wide. “Your grandma was telling me that it’s one of the oldest trees on the island.”

Kendra barely glanced at the tree. “Its branches are all twisted up funny, like a dancer’s arms.” She lifted her own arms, striking a wobbly ballerina pose, tongue stuck out like some kind of wild little creature. “Looks kinda creepy, if you ask me.”

Nina bit back a sigh, searching past the attitude to find the sweet girl she knew was still in there somewhere. She gave her daughter an encouraging grin, holding tight to hope. “Looks like it’s trying to give the whole road a big ol’ hug to me.”

“If you say so,” she mumbled, her voice as flat as a pancake.

But Nina wasn’t ready to give up—not on the mood, not on this trip, not on her daughter. “I do. And I’m hoping that’s how we’re going to feel this summer. Like we’re right where we’re meant to be.”

About the Author

Kayla E. Green is an award-winning author and poet who writes to remind others—and herself—that light always prevails over darkness. When she isn’t writing, reading, or spending time with her family, she loves singing loudly and off-key to KLove Radio and pretending she’s a unicorn. Fittingly, her YA debut fantasy novel is titled The Goodness of Unicorns.

More from Kayla

I wrote Hadley the Hippo is What She Eats to provide a fun story to engage small learners. Through the hippo’s journey through the jungle where her color changes based on what she eats, pre-K and primary students can learn about both fruits and colors. But, what’s more, the back of the book contains a note to parents/teachers with activities to discuss the importance of consumption—what we listen to on the radio, watch on TV and online, and read impacts our minds and hearts. Approaching this lesson in an age-appropriate way is important for providing a foundational framework for discernment later in life.

As a former elementary school librarian and classroom teacher turned full-time mother, I know firsthand how play and learning go hand in hand. This principle applies to foundational skills for understanding biblical teachings, character development, math, literacy, and, well, a lot of things! Playing games with your learners can help reinforce that learning is fun–not only is there a game involved, but your learner will get to spend time with YOU!

As a part of the book tour, I’m so excited to share 3 learning games with you! These games are designed with minimal materials but maximum fun. PLUS, they can be modified for various age groups. Find these 3 learning games to play with littles at home here in this online slideshow:

Review

Hadley the Hippo Is What She Eats by Kayla E. Green is such a cute children’s story. My youngest daughter is obsessed with hippos, so this story was the perfect fit for our bookshelf. Hadley is hungry, and she eats lots of different things. But everything she eats makes her turn the color of what she eats.

I loved the different rhyming words. My favorite part of this children’s book, though, was at the end when Kayla gives some different ideas of how to use this story to relate to 1 John 2:16 from a kid's perspective. Outside of this, the story itself is not faith-based. It is just a fun story about a hippo eating different fruit and turning that color, paired with cute illustrations. So anyone can enjoy this story. I do love the intentional biblical link that is included at the end.

Excerpt

Irene sets the knitting in a basket on the floor, stands up, and positions herself behind Nikki. Placing her hands on the girl’s shoulders, she waits without a word, more patient than I’ve ever been. But I can see Irene is wearing thin too when she tips her head up like she’s pleading with God for a break.

With one finger, she taps Nikki’s shoulder.

“What?” She twists to look at Irene, her expression less than respectful. Irene waits a beat before answering. “You need to keep the monitor on. The baby needs you.”

“He’s fine. Children need to learn their mothers aren’t going to come running every time they cry. And, anyway, I’m tired. I just had a baby.” She turns her head away.

The folder slips from my grip and skitters along the floor.

Irene walks around the couch and stands in front of Nikki, her arms crossed, her body bent slightly forward with a large pendant swinging like she’s about to perform a hypnotism.

My attention is drawn to Sierra who shrinks into the corner of the couch as the conflict rises.

Collecting the folder, I stay on my knees near Sierra. Maybe the presence of someone else will soothe her in some way. Or am I only making it worse?

Irene clasps her hands together. “Your son is a newborn baby. All you teach him by not caring for him is that his needs will not get met by his mother.”

My jaw drops open. The words are clear, brutal, and . . . true.

“I take care of him fine.” She stands, broader and taller than Irene, then takes a step too close for comfort.

With her thumb, Irene slides the dial on the baby monitor to maximum volume.

Tiny frantic wails shake my heart and make me want to scale the stairs at superhuman speed. I would never let him cry that way, but I don’t have a son to soothe. The unfairness of it has a bitter taste.
