Adrienne craned her neck to peer out the window as the airplane began its descent. “Look, there’s the Eiffel Tower!” She pointed a finger at the famous structure growing larger and larger as they approached. “Can you see it?”
Marie sat up and nodded as she straightened her ponytail.
Eddie leaned across Marie and squinted. “It’s uglier than I’d expected.”
“Don’t say that!” Marie gasped. “You don’t want to ignite Adrienne’s wrath.”
“It just strikes me as odd to see this bulky metal structure in the middle of such a beautiful, historical city. That’s all.”
“Actually, you’re not the only one who has voiced that opinion,” Adrienne conceded.
“Many of the French said the same thing when the tower was built in 1889 for the World’s Fair celebration of the Centennial of the Revolution. Besides, it was only supposed to be temporary. But now it’s one of the most famous monuments in the world.”Eddie folded his arms as he glanced at Marie. “See, I know a thing or two about culture.”
Adrienne’s heartbeat quickened as the plane continued to descend, then a jolt signaled that the wheels had touched down. They were finally here. In Paris!
After leaving security, a familiar, well-coiffed lady in a lavender sundress and hat greeted them.
“Tante Cici!” Adrienne exclaimed as she ran to embrace her aunt. The sweet scent of Chanel perfume filled her with a sense of familiarity.
“Bonjour, chérie.” Cici enveloped Adrienne in her arms and planted a kiss on each cheek.
